The Irish Student Riding Championships were held last weekend in Duffy’s Equestrian Centre, Claregalway, Co. Galway. The two day Championship event was hosted by NUI Galway. The event included Showjumping, Dressage and Prix Caprilli. With over 130 riders competing in Showjumping, the standard of riding was exceptional. After 4 rounds, the winner was Emily Corbett from Team GB. Emily’s Family own Tryella Equestrian Centre where numerous Eventing Ireland are hosted. Runner up was 2011’s National Champion, Liz Dore from NUI Maynooth. The Trinity College Dublin team were crowned ‘Cashel House Equestrian’ National Team Champions. The team of Poppy Blandford, Katie Weldon and Zoe McElligott proved hard to beat with all riders progressing to the second round.

The Dressage competition took place over two days with UCD, UCC and DIT all fielding very strong teams. It was DIT coming out on top with Sara Glynn and Declan Crowley going head to head in the final round. Sarah piped Declan at the post which crowned her ‘Dubarry Ireland’ National Dressage Champion. A title she previously won in 2010. DIT’s individual’s results helped them take the team title with UCC coming in a close second.

UCC swept the boards in the Prix Caprilli with their team of Holly Fleming, Hazel Carroll and Emer Mulcahy winning UCC’s first ever Prix Caprilli Title. Mulcahy continued here success by taking the Connolly’s Red Mills individual Prix Caprilli title. With UCC’s outstanding results, they were crowned overall National College of the Year for 2012.
